This policy is based on the template supplied by WordPress. It has been designed to meet privacy requirements in the EU but hopefully it will answer questions from any user anywhere. The most important point to note is that this is a New Zealand blog and is governed by New Zealand legislation.

This blog is based in New Zealand and runs on servers located in New Zealand. All aspects of privacy are governed by New Zealand legislation to the exclusion of all else.
What personal data we collect and why we collect it
Comments are turned off as a matter of blog policy. It avoids the risk of being spammed or accessed by nefarious means via a comment system.
Should comments be opened for a particular post then, when visitors leave comments on the site, the data collected is what is shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
Media cannot be uploaded by visitors or commenters to the blog.
If you fill out a contact form that information will be held for whatever length of time is appropriate for the purpose of the contact.
Any information you provide via the contact form may be published (if appropriate and suitable). It may also be shared with the appropriate authority if it offends good taste or references an illegal act that has, or may be, committed.
None other than those that might be required by WordPress and Jetpack (a WordPress plugin). Any cookies will be used only for user statistics – there are no trackers.
Embedded content from other websites
Every attempt is made to avoid embedding content. Instead links are provided to the material referred to in the blog post.
Basic visitor data may be gathered via Jetpack and other administrative tools. The information is anonymised.
Who we share your data with
Any information gathered via this blog is handled in terms of New Zealand privacy law which is more stringent than that found in many other countries. Basically personal information isn’t (cannot be) shared with anyone except when authorized by the individual who supplied it, or where required by law and then only to official agencies. For the removal of doubt, if formally requested by an official agency any information held will be made available.
Should there be mailing list addresses associated with the blog they are protected by law from disclosure and cannot be sold, leased or gifted to anyone without the prior consent of those on the list.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained for the life of the blog. If you make contact for purposes other than commenting on the blog then the information will be held only so long as it remains relevant to the blog.
If you sign up for blog update e-mails your information will be held until you unsubscribe. It will then be deleted.
For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive a copy of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you (comments posted on the blog are not personal data). It is held as part of the website and protected by the systems of the hosting company (webhostingnz.com). Avonsideblog makes archival backups which are held on removable media and stored off-line.
